This site is dedicated to the memory of Margaret Downey.

Margaret Downey, my mother, was born Margaret Carbis on 28 February 1938. She met my father Bernard when she was aged 15 and married him on her 21st birthday. They would have celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on 28th February 2009. Heartbreakingly, this was not to be.Sadly,my mother Margaret died of ovarian cancer after a long brave battle on new year's day 2009. She had all the symptoms, bloatedness, back pain, post menopausal bleeding, lack of appetite. These began in August 2006 but even after being referred to hospital several times for scans and exploratary surgery, she was not diagnosed with ovarian cancer until December 2007. The tumour had grown out of her ovary into her abdomen. She underwent more surgery and chemotherapy and was told in July 08 that her disease was getting better. She had a scan in September 08 which was also good. Then in October 08 she started to have pains in her left side and constipation. She was given laxatives by the oncologist with no improvement. She went to her gp in November 08 as things were getting worse and was referred back to the oncologist who confirmed that her cancer had returned. More chemotherapy was planned but unfortunately her illness deteriorated and she was unable to have it. We were given the devastating news in December 08 that she only had weeks to live. My mother insisted on being told this news and bore it with great courage. My mother passed away at 1.55am on 1/1/09. I am an only child and I have lost my beloved mother, my confidant and best friend to an illness that is cruel and unpredictable. Please help to find a cure or at least an accurate screening tool for this little publicised disease.
